Paki snorted at him and started walking. She looked over her shoulders, telling him to follow. Taki might have been soft spoken and cajoling, but Paki preferred using her muscles to make things happen. The brown wolf trotted toward the nearest town, tail whisking upright behind her. Every few paces she stopped and turned making sure Schuan was following. She lifted her lips back from her fangs and snarled softly. It was meant for Taki, but the boy received some of it as well. The sooner they were in a hotel and Taki was happy, the sooner PAki would be fed. That was all she cared about either way.

Sighing, Schaun followed the wolf wordlessly. Instead of trying to make conversation with Paki, he drifted off into thought. He wasn't totally sure, but he thought that there might be a town in the direction they were heading. Not that it mattered. He had been wandering aimlessly for most of his life, so a bit more wouldn't kill him. Hopefully.
It caught him slightly by surprise when she randomly snarled. He did not know what had triggered the reaction. It was probably nothing though, since she didn't go off and try to kill it or something. While he was rather glad nothing else was trying to rend their faces off or something, a good fight might be nice now. Liven up the mood. Instead he lightened the monotony by planning out his next few days should they be heading into town. Not that planning was fun, but it was better than staring blandly at the scenery as he followed behind a large wolf. Words: 166 Notes: N/A Status: Complete

'Alright 'princess' I got our greeter-pieces here... take over.' Paki growled and shoved Taki back into the real world while she curled up inside. Taki blinked in surprised and stumbled against the city limit sign. 'You're a meanie Paki.' she thought. The wolf snorted a reply and went silent. Taki looked up, noticing the town about half a mile away. She signed, at least Paki had made the ache go away... for a bit.
"Oh goodie... you couldn't have gotten us closer Paki? Oh well... at least there's a town... hopefully one with hot water." She'd learned that not all place in North America had hot water the hard way when stumbling through Louisiana. She had also learned that some rodents could be friggin huge in that same manner. Now she faced the prospect of a half mile walk with a hungry wolf.

As they moved along, Schaun let his mind wander a bit. He made sure to keep track of where it went though, just in case he needed it again. Every now and again he would pull back to reality and make sure he wasn't falling to far behind the wolf that currently led. It was at one of these moments that he checked and found that the wolf was gone, replaced by Takira again. Stepping up his pace, Schaun moved up next to her. "Any place we should go to first?" He asked casually. Truth be told he had no idea why they were heading towards civilization, though he was guessing that his companion wasn't up to quite as much isolation as he could. Indeed, most of his life had been solitary. Schaun had come into contact with the rest of humanity as little as possible. It wasn't that he disliked society or anything, he just prefered the quiet of being alone in the woods to the bustle of even the smallest cities.
Despite the fact that he had asked Takira what they should do first, his mind was already mapping out his path. Depending on how long they were there, they were probably going to need more in the way of food. They might also need shelter a bit more comfortable than a quite alley or a rooftop. Exactly what they got would be dependant on how much money she had. You couldn't really steal a hotel room after all. You could sneak into one, but that gets harder the more people you need to fit into it. Words: 273 Notes: done at school. Figured you might be tired of waiting. Status: Complete

Taki blinked a bit stupidly at him, Paki had actually been social? There was a surprise.
"Eh... I dunno about you, but I'm hitting a Walmart, a Holiday Inn, and a Diner, and I'll be cussed if they say they don't take American Express." For the first time in quite a while she let her raw humor show through her 'traveling American girl' facade. She flashed him a grin and kept walking. They were still a good third of a mile away from the town, and while she was a great sprinter endurance was something she lacked. Ironically enough, wolves were famed for endurance.
"And if something on that list happens to NOT exist in this town then I will find the next best thing. Supplies, lodging, food, clean, sleep. As far as I'm concerned it's that, then leave. I want to see all of America and as much of other countries as I can before I'm 19." She was still grinning, despite her leg muscles practically screaming at her from this new form of use. She silenced them with another silent inward growl, and kept padding forward, hoping that her companion would crack a joke or something to give her an excuse to be more friendly.

As the possibilities of a conversation loomed, Schaun reeled back his wandering mind with something close to regret. He always enjoyed trailing thought paths with no real haste involved. However, such a thing made for strange talk. As he listened, he was rather relieved by her words. A credit card was extremely useful when on the move, though it made you easier to track. He was fairly sure she had no reasons to hide from the police though. The grin she gave was rather infectious, and he had no choice but to return one.
Schaun held his grin as she continued, and he was mildly intrigued about her intense urge to go places. "It seems to me that you've got a streak of wanderlust about a mile wide, Takira." He said in a rather offhand tone. It was always nice to know a fellow traveler. "Of course, travelin' can be mighty lonely sometimes. I ain't got plans or nuthin, so I'd be willin' to stick around...if you'll be allowin' my comp'ny and all." He said after a moment, filling his speech with a thick country drawl he had learned from a random fisherman he had spent a couple months with some time ago. Not that he was trying to be funny or something, he just liked the rhythmic sound that form of speech had. If he was a bit better at it he might have been able to sing with it. The accent was almost musical in the way it flowed. Besides, sometimes he had to take on an alternate persona, and changing your voice can be more important than changing your looks. Taki gave a grin and a small laugh, allowing herself a small dance-step-skip in joy. She slung her arm around him and planted a nice kiss on his cheek, there was nothing really flirtatious about it, it was the same kind of kiss she'd give her brother if she had one. She then let him go, recognizing that he was a loner who probably wouldn't appreciate the contact.
"I'd love that! Just watch out for Paki if she's looking at you like you're food. I'd advise climbing a tree or getting wet because she can't do the first and she entirely refuses to do the second. Also, if you have a weapon, I'd advise packing it in secret. We can stop at any random place in town and get you some stuff better suited to travel. Just trust me, this is going to require airplanes, and they won't let you in the terminal looking like a vagabond. Also, Paki will listen better if you yell at her in Scandinavian... for when I don't have any kind of control over her. And no, I have no clue why." She grinned. She could be quite a chatterbox when she wanted to be, but she just loved having company.
She kept going until they hit the town. In which time she began to search like a any random police hound for someone who could point her to the shops she wanted. A random man managed to point her to a Walgreen, the closest thing to a Walmart they had in town. She found the store and trotted right in.

He was startled by the sudden burst of joy, though not nearly as much as he was by the friendly kiss his cheek received. He hadn't been around people long enough to find the intricate differences between the types of affection a human can show, so he chose simply to assume it was friendly. If it was more, it would come out in time, if it wasn't, no incredibly awkward moments would occur. A part of him did recoil slightly from her touch, suddenly positive that he was about to get mugged or something. Of course, self-preservation was a well developed feeling for people who lived with nature, so it wasn't a warning he took seriously. Once she started talking again, he made sure to file the information given under 'useful' The advice about Paki wasn't exactly the best, since he could simply fly away and did not know any Scandinavian. "I'll keep that in mind" He said.
Once they were in the town, he followed her and helped ask around for a shopping area. Once they had found a Walgreens, he hung around outside for a moment. He wasn't long though, towns were full of easy marks for pickpocketing. Schaun entered the store $50 richer. A brief browse revealed little, but he did grab a couple small things of microwave soup before catching up with Takira again. "So, about that clothing thing. What all would I need? I'm rather fond of these clothes." He said, indicating his faded and non too clean clothes. Words: 262 Notes: N/A Status: Complete

Taki stopped midway through her inspection of a new, non-leather, wallet and turned to face him. Her eyes were suddenly sharp and appraising. His clothes weren't too bad, but he'd need to look less scruffy. Finally she nodded and went back to her appraisal of a wallet.
"I'd say a pair of GOOD jeans or cargos, no rips, no stains, as little fading as possible, along with a good tee-shirt; white, gray, dull yellow, brown, possibly shades of blue or green, purple would be okay too but it kinda calls you homosexual to most people. Black makes security want to target you, red and orange scream for attention. A pair of good condition sneakers, some cologne and maybe a pair of cheap shades or glasses, just for show of course. Also a backpack, a simple one. Towns like this usually have church stores rather than thrift stores or dollar stores, but you can get good deals with cash. It's best to go for second hand so that it looks like it IS yours. It's also a good idea to have two sets of pants and two shirts, in case something happens. No chains, if you have a knife or a gun you'll have to declare it and check it in with the security or such. You'll want a passport, that's easy to obtain at a DMV. Other than that and maybe a good shower or two you actually aren't that bad off. Although Paki says it'll take more than a couple of showers to make you stop smelling like deer droppings." Taki shrugged and then wandered into an isle meant only for girls. She was good at multitasking while she worked at things. She also had fast wits when she needed them, though that was rare. Finally satisfied with her choices she trotted up to the front counter and offered her card and ID to the cash register.

Schaun listened carefully, trying to remember everything important. He simply would not wear cologne, but the rest of it shouldn't be too bad. He didn't really feel the necessity behind the coloration of his shirt though. A shirt's a shirt right? "Well, Paki has a better sense of smell than your average person, so I'm not really worried about how fragrant I've become. Besides, waiting for a passport will give me plenty of time to bathe." He said. The helpful little directory signs over the aisles convinced him NOT to follow her, so instead he went off to see if this little shop carried anything he might need. He managed to find a simple pair of sunglasses, as well as some hygienic supplies. Since he wasn't alone anymore, he would probably have to stop relying on the rain as a convenient shower and actually bathe frequently. Not to say he avoided doing so, it's just that he has gone for a few weeks without it before.
Once he had gathered up what he felt he needed, he got into the line behind Takira. As he waited, he ran over several possibilities. Though he liked his knife, it would probably have to go. He could pick up something in a country with lighter security than America. In other words.....anywhere. Until the time when they decide to leave the country, he wouldn't have to worry about it though. For now he would simply need to find some new clothing.
Strangely, or perhaps not, the cashier didn't seem too pleased about the filthy child standing in his line. Well that's just too bad isn't it? Besides, it wasn't like he was going to let the opinion of some random person in a Walgreens insult him. "So are we going to find lodgings first or go find some clothing? Either one works for me." "You got mud fer brains? I'm tired. We're finding a Holiday Inn and getting a suit before we go out to eat. Cloths can wait. 'Snot like they can run away on the rack dude. 'Sides, I'm tired, and I'm feeling cranky. Let's just put it out that cranky me usually lets Paki loose, and cranky Paki usually kills anything that moves." She kept walking, leaving the store, dropping 13 cents into a panhandlers palm and trotting down the sidewalk for about 3 blocks before realizing she had seen her hair in a window and it was a mess.
Not normally a fastidious groomer, this still bothered her. Now she sidetracked, hunting down the shiny side of a stop sign and doing her best to tame the bushy red-gold-brown mess of hair that stuck out in about 20 thousand different directions. Finally, satisfied that she didn't look like Jane straight from the jungle, she turned around and resumed her heat-seeking-missile mission of finding a Holiday Inn. Finding one she entered, smiling brightly and making sure her backpack was visible.
"Hello! My names Takira Wolverton, I don't suppose you'd have a suit prepared for two? Price isn't really an issue. Also, do you allow pets?" Polite exchange occurred and Taki gently tapped Schuan on the head with his copy of the room key before waltzing down the hall to the elevator. She planned to shower, change, and then she was heading out to eat. For the moment she didn't care what her companion did.

Schaun smiled slightly "Your words wound my very soul. You must forgive my muddy brain, for it cannot understand such complication" He said, his voice filled with mock agony. His isolation had almost made him forget how much fun a conversation could be. Almost....but not quite. Once she was done, he quickly concluded his purchase and followed her out onto the streets. Hotels and whatnot were her thing after all, so she would be much better at finding them. If Schaun really wanted to sleep in a city, and alcove or nook would do. His falcon wasn't large by any standard, so there were a lot of options for him.
When she stopped to fix her hair, he took a moment to try on the sunglasses. They weren't the best, but they were as much a ruse as the clothing he would soon be buying. He would probably never use the glasses, but it was important that he look the part of a random traveler. Once they had found a hotel, he tried to fade into the background and let her do the talking. It worked rather well. After taking the card that was assaulting his head, Schaun followed Taki up towards the elevator. He received some strange looks as they went along. The thoughts of the others was written plainly on most of their faces. Most of humanity had not learned to shield their thoughts from their expressions. Surely nothing that dirty and wild could have been admitted into such a fine place. What could possibly be wrong with that messed up boy? He looks like he's been living in a cave for a year....
It wasn't that the thoughts bothered him or anything. In fact, he found it rather amusing. They might be successful businesspeople, but he was more. He had a talent that some would kill to get. Whole libraries of fiction involved shape change, and many a child dreamed of the freedom it brought. Let them have their money and their lives. He could take what he needed, and he simply couldn't be happier about his life.
They soon reached the elevator, and he paused to peak into the nearby vending machines. "You can have my pillows too if you want them," He said, not taking his eyes off of the various candies and salty chips available. "No way in hell I'll be able to get to sleep on something as soft as a fine hotel bed, so I won't be needing much anything off of it. I might need one of the blankets though, depending on how the carpet is." He fully intended to sleep on the floor. The last time he had been in a bed he had gotten no sleep. "Hmm... I dunno... Depends on how Paki feels after dinner... Right now I just want a shower. See you in 30."With that she disappeared into the bathroom, taking her backpack with her. She fully intended to enjoy the next thirty minutes of hot water.
~~~
"Ahhh... much better. It's surprising what half a month without hot water will do to you. Anyways, wanna grab a bite to eat?" She padded out of the bathroom, hair hanging down around her face and neck in wet, sable ringlets. She'd changed clothes while in there as well. Right now she was wearing a black T-Shirt that had the 'witty' saying "If you don't know, then I ain't telling you." printed across it's front. She'd also traded out her pants for a pair of black sweats. It was clear she planned on eating, and then falling into bed, regardless of anything else.
"I'll let you pick the meal style. This place has Mexican (name me a place that doesn't), country home-style, ranch style, fried, buffet, and... seafood." she commented, listing off what she saw in the yellow pages. She looked up at him, waiting for an answer.
Schaun nodded slightly in response to Takira, though he doubted that she actually saw it. Once she was in the bathroom though, he opened the window and looked out. He also needed to bathe, and it would be faster if they didn't have to alternate. He propped himself up onto the windowsill and blurred into feathers, taking off as soon as his frame could handle it instead of waiting for the full shift. It took him ten full minutes, but he found what he was looking for. 'It' was a house, one where the occupants had all left. A quick check through the various closets confirmed that they were out on vacation or some other activity that takes a while. He had no idea how long they had been gone, so speed was needed. Locating the various things he would need, Schaun also took the time to bathe.
His was a lot shorter though. He was out in five minutes, and dressed in another three. He was on a schedule, and it might be strange if he showed up at the window after she was out of the shower. A brief clean up and he was back into the air.
He actually managed to beat Takira, by a whole thirty seconds. He had just enough time to shift and sit down on the bed before she walked out. She began listing restaurant types, and he nodded slightly with each one. "It's been quite some time since I've eaten anywhere that could be called a restaurant, so they all sound pretty good. I'm leaning towards the buffet though. I haven't been comfortably full since the last migration season." Honestly, he didn't really care about where they ate, so long as the food wasn't greasy hell. If all else fails though, there were bound to be some birds withing even a small radius of the hotel. Words: 321 Notes: Yeah, might as well Status: Complete
